Our Story is reflected through the Journey of our Family.
The roots of our story trace back to 1960s and 70s communist Poland, where resourcefulness and determination defined a generation of mechanics. Limited access to tools and materials honed ingenuity and a deep passion for engineering. Janusz Mazurewicz, along with his close friend Wiesiek Wolak, sought to transcend these constraints by venturing to Africa in the early 1980s, aiming to refine their skills and apply their craft in new frontiers.
In 1982, Janusz’s journey led him to Japan, where he joined Nissan’s 4x4 development team during a transformative period for Africa's automotive landscape. Immersed in Japan’s culture of relentless improvement and technological advancement, he embraced its philosophy, which instilled a commitment to precision, discipline, and innovation. Vehicles were not merely machines but symbols of reliability and efficiency. This perspective would shape Janusz’s technical expertise and understanding of what it takes to build truly dependable vehicles capable of thriving in Africa's demanding conditions.
Stationed later in Rosslyn, South Africa, Janusz encountered the rugged terrains and unique mobility challenges of the continent firsthand. From expansive savannahs to mountainous regions, he observed how vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Hilux, and Nissan Patrol became workhorses for millions, renowned for their resilience and adaptability. Meanwhile, minibuses from Toyota, Nissan, and Isuzu formed the backbone of urban transport systems, the lifelines connecting millions of commuters daily and proving the value of reliable, cost-effective mass transit.
Through travels across Southern and Eastern African nations, we gained a profound understanding of the role of vehicles in driving economic growth, connectivity, and community empowerment. Whether it’s a farmer delivering crops to market, a safari operator navigating remote trails, or a small business moving goods, vehicles in Africa must be durable, affordable, and easy to maintain. This realisation has driven our pursuit of solutions tailored to Africa’s diverse and often challenging landscapes.
Returning to Europe, we witnessed Poland’s automotive sector transform into a global manufacturing powerhouse. By the 2000s, Poland had emerged as a hub for component production, with exports of engines, transmissions, and electrical systems thriving in European markets. EU integration provided access to funding, opened new markets, and standardized regulations, attracting major global players. By 2010s, over 90% of Polish vehicles and components were exported, currently contributing approximately 10% to the nation’s GDP and cementing Poland’s position as a critical player in the global automotive ecosystem.
Today, Poland is at the forefront of electric and hybrid vehicle development, supported by a dynamic network of over 150 manufacturing enterprises and more than 400 technology providers. Industry leaders such as Volkswagen, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Solaris, MAN, Bosch and LG Energy Solutions drive this ecosystem, fostering cutting-edge R&D and sustainable transportation solutions.
As we turn our focus to Kenya, our mission is to adapt decades of global expertise to create mobility solutions that balance affordability, sustainability, and resilience. Mobility in Kenya is not just about transportation; it is about empowering people and building infrastructure that supports progress. Drawing on lessons from Japan, South Africa, and Poland, we are committed to delivering solutions tailored to the country’s evolving needs.
Looking ahead, we believe the global energy transition presents both challenges and opportunities for Africa. While electric vehicles dominate global conversations, our observations suggest that alternatives like LPG and CNG offer a more viable near-term solution. These fuels address the continent’s need for affordability and reliability without the high costs of EV infrastructure development. Over the next 15 years, LPG and CNG are poised to play a critical role in Africa’s mobility landscape.
Further into the future, hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) hold the potential to revolutionise transportation. With their zero-emission capabilities and growing infrastructure investments, we anticipate FCEVs gaining traction by the mid-2030s, aligning with Africa’s aspirations for clean, advanced mobility solutions. However, we approach battery-powered EVs with caution. Studies highlight the environmental costs of lithium-ion batteries and the prohibitive expense of establishing charging infrastructure, making BEVs less practical for much of the continent.
Instead, we advocate for a diversified approach - leveraging LPG and CNG today while laying the groundwork for hydrogen technology tomorrow. For us, mobility is not just about vehicles but about empowering communities, fostering resilience, and driving Africa’s journey toward innovation and sustainability. This is Our Story, and this is our Vision for the future of mobility for our beloved continent – Africa!
